“Miss Anne, You’re Silly”

13 Apr

My Wednesday classes started the new semester today. Those of you who have been in my classes know that I start each one with a whole lot of giggling and other general goofiness, but it’s a little bit of a surprise to families who are new to me. Today, after the giggling and the “Hello Song,” came “Pease Porridge Hot,” where we chanted about crazy things like hot ice cream and nine-day-old pizza. Afterwards, one little girl looked at me and said, “Miss Anne, you’re silly.” (What a HUGE compliment!)

I love that we have permission to be goofy and silly and wacky and nutty in Music Together class — for one thing, it’s fabulous for our children to see us being so silly (we’re speaking their language, after all), and it’s also wonderful, and healthy, and life-enhancing to be able to leave our adult seriousness at the door and just play.

Now I’m thinking of other hot, cold and nine-day-old things we can chant about — the sillier, the better. I bet the children will give me amazing ideas (“fire truck in the pot, nine-days-old?”). Now, that’s what I’m talking about!
